Whether you've built your own home, purchased one, or are changing apartments, you're probably excited about the move to your new place. However, moving is more than packing, hiring movers, making a moving checklist, and preparing for the actual move day. For a successful move, you'll also need to think of how you'll seamlessly settle in the new home.

Whether you're preparing to move or you're in your new home with dozens of boxes, this guide is for you. Check out the following key things to ensure you settle easily in your new home.

Update Your Address

After you move, remember to change your address to reflect the address of your new home. Go to your local post office or visit their website to fill out a change of address form to avoid the wrong delivery of important correspondence. Also, contact your financial service provider, such as the bank, and inform them you've relocated so they can update your personal information. If your move is interstate, update your vehicle registration and title information.

Transfer Utilities

To avoid disconnection and similar inconveniences, transfer utilities to your new address. Change your phone, internet, gas, water, electricity, and cable to your new home. With most of these providers, you can just sign up online and update your address. Thus, you don't have to go to their offices unless making the changes online is impossible.

Apart from transferring utilities and services, check and ensure they are all up and running.

Conduct a Walk-Through

A walk-through is a complete tour of your new home before settling in. Since you just arrived and you're yet to unpack, the house is almost empty and facilitates a thorough inspection. During the tour, take your time, and be attentive to details. Move from one room to the next to get a clear view of your home.

Ensure every fixture is in mint condition and properly working. If you identify any issue during the walk-through, get the necessary repairs done before you unpack and organize your belongings.

Replace Locks

If you move into a pre-owned house, you can't be sure of the number of key copies the previous owners had and if they still have them. To secure your home, make sure to change all the locks to your exterior doors after you move in. Contact a trusted locksmith or change the locks yourself if you can.

Check Safety Features

As you settle in your new home, inspect all the safety features and devices and ensure they work properly. Check the condition of carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. If necessary, change batteries or buy new detectors if the current ones are faulty or old. If the new home doesn't have a fire extinguisher or has one that is expired, purchase a new one.

Also, inspect the range hood and ensure the device is clean and well vented. As a precautionary measure, make sure you also have a fully stocked first aid kit in the new house.

Locate Necessary Fixtures

After you move in, identify the location of switches, circuit box, and main valves to the water and gas supply. If you know the location of these valves, you can easily switch off the main supply and prevent real danger in case of water or gas leaks. Also, knowing the location of the circuit box avoids the inconveniences of having to search for it after breaker trips.

If you don't know what to do, settling in a new home can be an ordeal. The above tips will help you to settle effortlessly and start a new life. Are you planning to move? If yes, contact Los Flores Movers for a smooth, hassle-free move.
