Do you plan to move during the summer? Whether your move will take you across town, the state, or the country, take a look at the top questions to ask before the weather gets warm and your big day arrives.
When Should You Book a Mover?
The summer is peak moving time. With kids out of school, plentiful vacation days, and warm, sunny weather, more families are ready to pack up and move. How can you beat the summer moving rush? If you have to move this summer:
- Contact the moving company as soon as possible. While you have no magic date to book your move by, the farther ahead of time your schedule this service the better. If you have a move-in date (such as the date your lease starts or a closing date), contact a mover immediately.
- Consider a mid-week move. Weekends are popular move-in times. You won't have to take extra vacation days off from work, and you have no rush-hour traffic issues. But the popularity of the weekend move may mean you can't book this time. Instead, consider a mid-week option.
- Choose a few different options.
Even though you've tried to book your move as early as possible, the moving contractor doesn't have your target day open. Flexibility in moving days can help you to schedule this service.
Now that you've booked a mover, move on to the next step and learn more about how to pack in the summertime heat.
How Should You Pack for a Summer Move?
While a mid-summer move may not mean you have to make significant changes as you pack, the seasonal heat and humidity can impact this process. If you don't have air conditioning or the weather is extremely hot:
- Choose early or late hours to pack. A cool morning breeze or chilly evening are ideal times to pack for your move.
- Take plenty of packing breaks. Are you tempted to pack non-stop? When the mercury rises, you're more at risk for heat-related injuries or illness. Take mid-packing breaks to rest and hydrate.
- Stop if you need to. If you feel dizzy, are profusely sweating, have a headache, are nauseous, have a high body temperature, or just don't feel right, stop packing immediately. Sit down in a cool space and rest, and contact your medical provider (or emergency services) if needed.
- Pack over several days. You don't need to pack your entire home in one day. If the forecast calls for high temperatures, take your time and pack over the course of a week or more.
Along with these warm-weather packing tips, ask friends or family members for help. The more people who help you to pack, the easier the process is on you.
How Should You Move in the Summer?
With your belongings packed in boxes, bins, and bags, you're ready to move everything into your new home. When your moving day arrives, stay safe and:
- Let the movers do their job. If you have concerns about how the summer heat will affect you, let the movers do the heavy lifting. You hired a professional for a reason. Now is not the time to micromanage or try to handle the move on your own.
- Hydrate all day. Hydration is essential during the summer heat. Drink plenty of water during your moving day, and have extra bottles available for the moving team. Avoid sugary or caffeinated sodas. These won't help you to hydrate.
- Use the air conditioning.
If possible, don't turn off your old home's electricity until after the move. This allows you to keep the AC on for the entire day.
Like with packing, start the moving day in the cooler early morning hours - especially if you need to load anything into your car. Not only will this help you to beat the heat, but it will also make the process easier for the movers.
