Moving during fall and winter means you may have to deal with bad weather. But the possibility of a storm, ice, or pouring rain doesn't have to cancel your big move. Instead, plan ahead to make the day as good as possible for those who are helping you with this cold, wet task. How? Discover six things anyone can do to help their helpers on the big day.
1. Provide Extra Gear
Set out some winter gear that movers and helpers can borrow. This could include extra gloves, scarves, hats, or umbrellas. In addition, you may need communal tools to meet the weather - things like extra towels or rags, plastic sheets or blankets, and a wide broom to keep the sidewalk clear. Place the gear near the door, and make sure everyone knows that it's there to borrow at any time.
2. Clear the Path
Before your movers or friends arrive, ensure that they have a clear path for their work. Start by keeping an eye on the weather as the big day approaches, and consider how you might prepare for whatever may be headed your way.
If a freeze is expected, get ice-melting materials and keep the sidewalks and stairs clear. If rain is an issue, create a solid footpath, perhaps using plywood or renting industrial mats to cover low spots. And make the path to and from the moving truck as straight and short as possible so people don't have to navigate obstacles in bad weather.
3. Protect the Floors
Protecting the floors of your home isn't just for your own protection. Conscientious movers try to keep your home clean and protected. But you'll make their work easier if you take steps to proactively protect the house. Lay down plastic sheeting or mats throughout, and place extra mats inside and outside the doors. And try to move boxes toward the front of the house for ease of pickup.
4. Provide Warm Snacks
Bring a little comfort to a blustery or freezing moving day by having some warm beverages and snacks for helpers. A continuous supply of hot coffee is a simple way to warm up everyone throughout the day. You might offer hot cocoa or even a homemade hot cider to spice things up a bit. And regularly heating up warm snacks could be just the pick-me-up your helpers need.
5. Heat Specific Rooms
If the weather is cold outside, you may or may not want to keep the heat on inside the whole house. If all that heat will just escape out open doors, it might not help that much anyway. But if you do turn down the heating, heat specific rooms (usually with a space heater) instead.
The most important room to heat is the bathroom. This will give everyone a little moment of comfort. And if everyone will take time to have lunch, you might heat up the kitchen so they can eat in the warmth. Or warm up a room where the movers will need to settle in to disassemble some furnishings.
6. Be Flexible
The best thing you can do to help everyone is to be flexible and reasonable. Weather may force you to change plans - even the date or timing of the move. Not all your helpers may be able to come. Or the process may take longer than it would in good weather. The more you go with the flow, the easier the move will be for movers. They will be able to do whatever they need to to make the move successful despite the weather.
If you follow these few tips, your bad weather move will be the best it can be - no matter what you and your movers must deal with.
